Guide

Use the audience, preparation, steps, and common mistakes as a working checklist.

For

  • Runners considering the Huangyaguan race
  • Travellers comparing adventure marathons
  • Runners planning for steps and heat

You will need

  • The identified official booking route
  • A 16–20 week hill and stair preparation window
  • A travel plan covering flights, insurance and organised transfers

Common mistakes

  • Using rules from a similarly named race
  • Applying a flat-road pace chart unchanged
  • Training uphill steps while neglecting descents

Several races use similar Great Wall names. This guide is specifically about The Great Wall Marathon organised by Albatros Adventure Marathons at Huangyaguan. Before booking, match organiser, venue and date together; rules from a spring or autumn event run by another organiser do not transfer.

This is not a staircase race in isolation

The photographs naturally emphasise the wall, but the official route links the Huangyaguan wall section with hilly village roads, gravel and asphalt. The organiser publishes 5,164 steps and 1,282 m of elevation gain. Marathon runners return to the wall late in the race, so an enthusiastic first climb can create a very long final chapter.

My routine runs beside Tokyo’s Sumida River are almost flat. I would not translate a normal 30 km road pace directly to this course. A more useful plan assigns a job to each terrain: hike the steep steps, shorten stride on descents and use runnable village roads to restore breathing rather than recover lost minutes.

For example, record time spent hiking and next-day leg fatigue instead of assigning the steps a per-kilometre road target.

Travel logistics are part of the event

The official booking route uses packages based around designated Beijing hotels and organised event transport. The seven-day itinerary includes Beijing activities, inspection of the wall section and race-day transfers. Flights into Beijing, extra nights and single-room supplements depend on the selected package and departure country.

For 2027, the official seven-day package is shown from USD 2,090. Race entry is listed separately at USD 150 for the marathon or half and USD 75 for the 8.5 km run. Add international travel to Beijing, insurance and any extra nights rather than presenting an unstable converted total.

Read the course as four different jobs

Start to the first wall section

The 07:30 start and a crowded approach make it easy to spend energy overtaking. A pace delay here matters less than arriving at the first major steps with breathing under control.

The 5,164 published steps

Height and width are irregular. Move to a deliberate hike before form breaks, and keep the next foothold in view on descents. Downhill stair preparation should increase gradually and include how the quadriceps feel the next day.

Villages and rolling roads

Leaving the wall does not turn the course into a flat city marathon. Gravel, asphalt, hills, warmth and exposure continue. Treat this as the place to drink, manage temperature and protect the legs—not as a chance to win back every minute.

The marathon’s late return

Marathon runners face a wall gate around 35 km that closes at 14:00. Plan backwards from this intermediate requirement as well as the overall eight-hour limit.

Is it realistic for a beginner?

Entry rules do not exclude a first-time marathoner, but flat-road endurance alone is not enough. Stairs, descents and warm conditions should each be rehearsed before combining them. The half and 8.5 km options also use the wall section, so shorter does not mean technically easy; it can still be the wiser choice when the experience matters more than distance.

Start by testing the shoes you already own on safe descents. Our guides to cushioned running shoes, running gels and running vests can help refine a setup after the organiser’s equipment and aid arrangements are clear.

Keep music for stable, low-risk sections

On steps, footsteps, nearby runners and staff instructions outrank rhythm. The public race page does not give a universal headphone answer, so the current runners’ guide controls. If you take favourite songs, use a short offline-ready queue that needs no handling while moving.

I built Beat Changer after repeatedly finding Apple Music songs I liked that felt just a little slow for a run. On this course, any tempo matching belongs only on stable village-road sections, with audio ready to stop before the wall.

Final booking checklist

  • [ ] The organiser is Albatros Adventure Marathons and the venue is Huangyaguan
  • [ ] The 15 May 2027 race date matches the exact travel product
  • [ ] Race entry and package cost are budgeted separately
  • [ ] Training supports both the 14:00 gate near 35 km and the eight-hour limit
  • [ ] Flights, insurance, passport and entry requirements have been checked
  • [ ] The current runners’ guide will be used for equipment, baggage and audio rules

The central attraction is crossing the Great Wall under your own power. The real difficulty is the sequence of descents, warm village roads and the late climb—not one dramatic staircase. Confirm event identity, travel format and cut-offs before booking, and the dream becomes a plan that can be trained.

The practical participation plan

Best for

  • Runners who value the finish experience over a road PB
  • Those able to train specifically for hills and stairs
  • Travellers comfortable with an organised race package

Not ideal for

  • Runners targeting a flat-road personal best
  • Those with pain on stair descents
  • Travellers who need fully independent logistics

Access and stay

Official packages organise event transport from designated Beijing hotels. Check the meeting point and inclusions of the exact package booked.

Nearest airport: Beijing Capital (PEK) or Beijing Daxing (PKX)

Where to stay: Official designated hotels in Beijing, with Huangyaguan-area arrangements depending on package

How to budget

Frequently asked questions

Which Great Wall Marathon does this guide cover?

It covers The Great Wall Marathon organised by Albatros Adventure Marathons at Huangyaguan, China. Other similarly named races have different rules.

When is the next race?

The organiser publishes 15 May 2027. Recheck the official page for changes before committing to travel.

How many steps are on the course?

The organiser publishes a total of 5,164. Their irregular height makes controlled descending as important as climbing.

Can I walk the steep sections?

Planned hiking is sensible on steep steps, but it must fit the eight-hour limit and the marathon gate at 35 km by 14:00.

They are not listed as mandatory. Choose tested grip that works across gravel, asphalt, stone and brick without creating new problems.

Can I travel independently to the start?

The official booking route is built around travel packages and organised transfers. Confirm the exact meeting points and inclusions of your package.

Are headphones allowed?

The public race page does not provide a universal answer. Follow the current runners’ guide and race-staff instructions.
